Ituri: three dead and 17 injured, provisional toll of a traffic accident (Road traffic police)

Kunda (Irumu), May 20th, 2025 (CPA) – Three (3) dead and seventeen (17) injured, some in a serious condition, is the provisional toll of a traffic accident that occurred Tuesday near Kunda, an entity located 15km from downtown Bunia, main town of the province of Ituri, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the Road Traffic Police (PCR). 

« Two (2) people died at the scene of the accident, including a three (3)-month-old baby, and another died a few hours later from her injuries in a health centre in Kunda and seventeen (17) injured, some of whom are in a serious condition. This is the provisional toll from a traffic accident that occurred three (3) kilometres from the centre of Kunda in Irumu territory », has declared the senior commissioner Yassin Ndolerire Nyamazabo, commander of the PCR group, Bunia squadron.

« It is a vehicle that was in a funeral procession coming from the Kanyasi district [Bunia] bound for the village of Tondabo for the burial of a young boy. Arriving on a downhill slope three (3) km from the centre of Kunda, it is at this point that the vehicle’s braking system has failed before the vehicle could brutally collide with the roadside, » he has explained. The senior commissioner, Ndolerire Nyamazabo, has explained that a technical breakdown is the main cause of this traffic accident. He has reassured that qualified officers from the PCR have already descended on the scene to make the necessary observations for further investigations to establish who was to blame. CPA/
