22 deaths reported during flooding in Kinshasa (Governor)

Kinshasa, April 6th, 2025 (CPA) – Twenty-two (22) deaths have been reported during the flooding caused by the torrential rain that fell on Friday night in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the provisional toll drawn up by the urban authority, has learned on Sunday from an official source. « Yesterday, there has been loss of life. There have been families affected. The current death toll is 22. We are continuing with the evacuations and so far we have not recorded any other deaths », has declared Daniel Bumba, Governor of Kinshasa. “It was since Saturday April 5th that we have begun to manage this crisis in Mitendi and Kimwenza. We have seen the waters rise over the N’djili bridge, causing flooding in the Salongo district of Limete. Now it’s moving towards the Ndanu district », he has added. According to him, arrangements have already been made and teams are already evacuating children to camps set up with the help of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). « We have also started, with the support of the army, to use Kamazi vehicles to rescue people coming from the Mont-Amba and Tshangu areas. So the situation is under control. We are with the people », has indicated the head of the urban executive. In a message addressed to the people of Kinshasa, the Assistant Divisional Commissioner Blaise Kilimbalimba, the capital’s police commander, has announced that civil and military engineering teams had been deployed in the vicinity of the N’djili river bridge to resolve the situation and restore traffic flow on boulevard Lumumba in Kinshasa.
