Bunia, April 24th, 2025 (CPA) – Around sixty lawyers, including trainees and those on the roll of the bar in the province of Ituri (north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo), have been sworn in by the Court of Appeal, a judicial source told us on Wednesday. ‘We have added around sixty (…). So that’s about 120 to 150 lawyers who have been added and who are scattered throughout the province of Ituri’, said the dean of the Ituri Bar Association, Mr Ruffin Luko. ‘Now, (…) we are close to 700 and we are continuing to compete with the other provinces because we are a young bar’, he said, indicating that it was a responsibility to meet the demands of the population who need to be defended in relation to their rights, especially in the context of insecurity. He pointed out that the province of Ituri needs justice, and that this justice requires a sufficient number of defenders, who are the lawyers. We have just added to the number of defenders of the rights of the people of Ituri (…) Wherever you are, whether it’s Aru, Mahagi, Ariwara, you can go to Komanda everywhere, in every town in the province,’ he added. He stressed the need to train the new graduates to become better lawyers, respectful of Congolese law and lawyers’ ethics, in particular “respect for magistrates, respect for the authorities, respect for clients and colleagues, and in particular respect for our laws to ensure that the legal profession is respected throughout the country”.
