Bas-Uele: the Provincial Assembly clarifies its position on the sale of 12,000 hectares

Buta, April 21st, 2025 (CPA) – The allegation that the Bas-Uele Provincial Assembly has been informed of the sale of twelve thousand (12,000) hectares of forest concessions in this north-eastern province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been denied by its president at a plenary session held on Saturday in Buta, the provincial main city, according to information received on Sunday.

« I would like, first of all, to make it clear to the people of Bas-Uele that the Provincial Assembly is in no way involved in the land acquisition process. What is true is that our institution has received several letters, not concerning the sale of land, but the sale of twelve thousand hectares of a forestry concession. Correspondence which, I must say, raises a certain disapproval », has declared the provincial deputy Simon Tutu Tsamemba, of the deliberative body, while promising the examination of this file. He has emphasised that, now that the matter has been officially referred to it, the Provincial Assembly is taking a particular interest in the matter.

« We have just returned from the parliamentary holidays. This matter will be examined and handled with all due diligence in order to provide clear explanations to our population », he has assured. This situation of the ‘alleged’ sale of twelve thousand hectares of land in Bas-Uele province is dividing the region’s political class and requires urgent clarification to enlighten public opinion.
