CAN U20 Football 2025: qualification of DRC to the 2nd round

Kinshasa, May 9th, 2025 (CPA) – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is qualified on Thursday for the 2nd round as one of the two best runners-up, following their 0-2 defeat by Senegal on Thursday in Suez, Egypt, on the 3rd day of group C of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN) for under-20s, according to the website afrik-foot, consulted by CPA.

‘Expected to be in the thick of the action, Senegal has answered the call. As a result, the Lion Cubs are through to the quarter-finals. The same goes for the Congolese, who finished as one of the two best third-placed teams following Tunisia’s defeat by Morocco (1-3) the previous day,’ it is read. According to the source, the title holders Senegal have opened the scoring through Cheik Tidiane Thiam (11th) and doubled the lead through Ibrahim Dieng (87th), from the penalty spot.

Ghana beat Central African Republic (1-0)

In Ismailia, Egypt, on the 3rd and final day of Group C, Ghana bounced back to beat the Central African Republic 1-0, Joseph Opoku (84th) scoring the winner. Despite their defeat, as mentioned above, DRC progressed to the quarter-finals, thanks to their 3rd place in Group C and the 4 points that placed them among the best in that section, due in part to Morocco’s 3-1 victory over Tunisia.  In the standings, Ghana finished top with 7 points, followed by Senegal (4 pts) and DRC (1 pt). In the quarter-finals, DRC will meet the winner of Group A, who will be announced in the next few hours.
