Community awareness of the impact of the Inga 3 project in the west of the DRC

Kinshasa, April 28th, 2025 (CPA) – The people of Luozi, 350 km west of the city of Kinshasa in the province of Kongo Central in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have been asked to participate in the development program of the Inga 3 project, according to a press release from the Agency for the Development and Promotion of the Grand Inga Project (ADPI-DRC), seen by the CPA on Saturday.  ‘This mission is part of a strategy to inform and raise awareness among local communities in the Luozi area, who are likely to be directly or indirectly affected by activities linked to the implementation of the Inga 3 program. The aim will therefore be to encourage the civic commitment of these stakeholders’, the source added.

The consultations, conducted jointly by ADPI-DRC and the World Bank (WB), are scheduled to end on Tuesday, April 29th. The program ‘aims to engage with local communities to contribute to livelihoods and local capacity building, while also addressing the many known issues related to the social impacts of Inga 1 and 2’, it read.  The future activities of this major program, which will focus on community and socio-economic infrastructure, will bring significant benefits for local and regional development. The sub-projects associated with the construction of the Inga 3 hydroelectric site will aim to improve access to essential services, strengthen the local economy and reduce poverty, thereby contributing to sustainable and inclusive development, the document continued.    This awareness-raising follows on from the PDI 3project pre-assessment mission organized in March 2025 with the World Bank and the African Development Bank, as part of the second pillar of the first component of the project, focusing on community development.  The Agency for the Development and Promotion of Grand Inga (ADPI-DRC) is a public body responsible for planning and managing the activities of the Grand Inga Programand for coordination with national and international stakeholders.
