Denmark takes over the presidency of the European Union

Kinshasa, July 1st, 2025 (CPA). – Denmark has taken over the presidency of the European Union  Council on Tuesday for six months, making the security of the continent its main priority, has  reported  international media. ‘With this presidency, we now have a new objective for NATO that has been adopted. Once NATO’s objective is in place, the main focus is on EU policy. It is clearly defined that security is the top priority,’ has declared Mette Frederiksen, Danish Prime Minister. ‘The security situation in Europe is unstable, and because it is unstable, it is also dangerous. If we look at the history of Europe, we know that conflict tends to be contagious. There are so many tensions today that this in itself can generate further tensions,’ she has added.

Denmark has indicated that it wants to implement the acceleration of spending increases decided within NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). According to the same source, Denmark wants to move forward with the European plan presented last March to increase the defence capabilities of European Union countries through simplified procedures and loans made available to states to finance investments in the European defence industry. At the end of June 2025, the members of the Atlantic Alliance have formalised their commitment to invest 5% of their annual GDP in security by 2035, with at least 3.5% going to military spending, even though Spain considered this target ‘unreasonable’ and asked for flexibility.
