DRC: Army denies alleged massacre of 318 people in Tanganyika

Kinshasa, June 17th, 2025 (CPA).- The Congolese army has denied a report by the President of the National Assembly regarding the alleged massacre of 318 people by a militia in Moba in the province of Tanganyika (south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo), according to a video received on Tuesday by CPA. « The FARDC wishes to inform the national and international community that no massacre of this magnitude has taken place on the night of June 14th to 15th in the territory of Moba. This information about the alleged killing of 318 people, made public without prior verification, is false and completely unfounded, » has pointed out the Major General Sylvain Ekenge, spokesperson for the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC).

The local civil society, he has said, in assessing the security situation, has instead stigmatised the activism of the Mutono armed group, which had been responsible for a dozen deaths since 2024 in the Maseba group in the Kansabala chiefdom in the Moba territory, where the territory administrator had handled the situation wisely.

The FARDC have asked the public not to give in to misinformation, manipulation and disinformation spread by ill-intentioned individuals, denouncing the use of this false information for political and propaganda purposes.

The President of the National Assembly, Vital Kamerhe, had announced at the closing plenary session of the March session that 318 people have been killed during the night of June 14th to 15th, 2025 in the Moba territory in Tanganyika. According to him, villages were evacuated after clashes between the population and a local militia.
