Kinshasa, May 29th, 2025, (CPA) – The elimination of gender-based discrimination in employment has been the subject of a bill to amend the labour code tabled at the office of the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a parliamentary source told us on Thursday.
‘I have submitted to the office of the National Assembly a draft law amending the current Labour Code with the aim (…) of promoting equality before the law and the protection of workers‘ rights, while eliminating discrimination based on gender, age and other irrelevant criteria’, said Eric Tshikuma, national MP.
According to Tshikuma, the aim of this legislative initiative is to ensure that some of its provisions are internally consistent, so as to guarantee their applicability and conformity with other laws in force in the Congolese legal system. In addition to bringing the Labor Code into line with the current Constitution and labour rights requirements, the MP believes that his proposal reflects his commitment to dignified and fair working conditions for all Congolese. In Africa, and particularly in the DRC, the disparities between men’s and women’s working conditions are numerous and decried by defenders of women’s rights. There are significant differences in terms of employment rates, salaries, the type of work performed and participation in company management. CPA/
