Mbandaka, April 30th, 2025 (CPA) – On Tuesday, an entity leader launched a plea for the construction of boreholes in the outlying districts of the town of Mbandaka, capital of Equateur province in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
‘The water from the wells is inconsistent; it can become dirty or cultured. This is a sign of unsanitary conditions. We’re asking our elected representatives to call for boreholes to be drilled, as is the case elsewhere in the city.
Our concern is that the authorities guarantee us clean water for drinking’, said Honoré Elonga, head of the Bon Secours neighborhood in the commune of Mbandaka. ‘Several promises have been made by the authorities in response to previous pleas on the issue of water, but nothing concrete has been done. I think our government has plans for sanitation, electricity and water. Certainly, the water problem must be a priority. Dozens of households are forced to drink water from wells, which is less reassuring in terms of hygiene’, he lamented. According to the head of the Bon secours district, water-borne diseases have become common and chronic due to the lack of water purification. It’s worth noting that water remains a problem in these outlying areas of the urban city of Mbandaka, which is entirely surrounded by water.
