European football: death on Thursday of a Portuguese international in a traffic accident

Kinshasa, July 3rd, 2025 (CPA).- The portuguese international footballer from Liverpool, England, Diogo Jota, has died on Wednesday night in Spain in a traffic accident, CPA has learned from international media. ‘Diogo Jota (28 years old) has died in a deadly road accident (…) which has occurred at kilometre 65 of the A52 near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria, Spain,’ it is read. ‘(At the time of the accident), Diogo Jota was in the car with his brother Andre, a 25-year-old who plays for Penafiel in the province of Zamora in south-west of Spain,’ the sources have explained, adding that the tragedy has occurred a few days after the marriage of the Portuguese international footballer from English club of Liverpool, on June 22nd, indicating that the car in which Diogo Jota and his brother were travelling caught fire, which engulfed the vehicle in flames. According to international media consulted on Thursday by CPA, Diogo Jota has been trained at Paços de Ferreira before signing with Athletico Madrid and then Porto. And it is at Wolverhampton that he has excelled before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2020 for £44.7 million. A Portuguese international with 49 caps and 14 goals, the Porto native has won the 2019 and 2025 Nations Leagues with Portugal and also competed in Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. He has missed the 2022 World Cup due to injury. Following this tragedy, the sources have indicated that Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has paid tribute to him: ‘The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who has greatly honoured Portugal, and his brother is unexpected and tragic.
