Flooding in Kinshasa: two confirmed cases of mpox notified in the sites

Kinshasa, May 6th, 2025 (CPA) – Two confirmed cases of Mpox (monkey pox) have been reported in the accommodation sites for flood victims in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo on April 5th, has learnt CPA on Monday from a press release from the Ministry in charge of Public Health. ‘“Two confirmed cases of Mpox, including one at the Bandalungwa municipal stadium site and one at the Tata Raphael stadium. One suspected case of Mpox (Bandal site) and 4 suspected cases of measles among flood-stricken children at the same site, as well as a case of HIV-TB co-infection identified in a 48-year-old flood victim,”’ it is read. The source has also noted the return of 145 flood victims to the community, while pointing out that the Kinshasa provincial health division (DPS) had not provided much information on the flooding.  It has indicated that the cumulative number of cases during week 18 (April 28th to May 3rd) in Kinshasa was 102, compared with 163 confirmed cases at the 17th week (from April 21st to 26th). The press release has specified that children aged 5 to 14 years old and young people aged 15 to 24 years old are the most affected by Mpox, with a predominance of males.  With regard to vaccination, the press release has noted that preparations for the Mpox vaccination campaign are continuing in the Haut-Uele DPS (Kibali Gold), with the arrival last Friday of a batch of 200,000 doses of Mpox vaccine. Turning to Anthrax (a bacterial zoonosis), the press release stated that four goats had died and one human case had also been reported, along with 18 suspected cases in 4 health zones. ‘10 samples were taken, 4 were analyzed and 1 positive case was reported’, the source has added. The source has also noted an increase in measles cases and a 13% reduction in reception capacity, with four MOPX treatment centers inactive in the province of Sud-Kivu.
