Kasai Central: drop in grain maize on the Kananga markets

Kananga, April 24th, 2025 (CPA). – A drop in the price of grain maize was observed on Thursday on the markets of Kananga, in Kasai Central (in the centre of the Democratic Republic of Congo), with a small measure weighing almost 3 kg going from FC 2,500  to FC 2,200 compared with FC 3,500 previously, CPA has noted on Thursday. « The significant drop in the price of grain maize is a real relief, as it means that everyone has access to this staple food », has declared Marceline Misenga Bakamubia, president of the association of resellers of agricultural products at the small Kamayi market. He has added that « the variety commonly known as “Djibuti” sells for CFA 2700 a small measure and yellow maize for between CFA 2,500 and CFA 2,200 ». This fall is the result of the abundance of this commodity, attributed in particular to the resumption of rail traffic following the rehabilitation of the Kananga-Demba-Mweka section of the railway, in the wake of anti-erosion work at Bena Kankonde, in the municipality of Lukonga, and at Bena Leka (Demba), has confirmed a structure supervising the markets. The contribution of peddlers, commonly known as Bayanda, has not been in the least responsible for the abundance of maize in this town, to the satisfaction of consumers. A family responsible with eleven children has called for a further reduction in the price of grain maize at this time of year.
