Kinshasa: 33 dead and over 200 household’s flooded, provisional flood toll (Official)

Kinshasa, April 8th, 2025 (CPA) – Thirty-three (33) dead, more than 200 households flooded, several houses washed away and 46 people hospitalized, is the provisional toll of the torrential rains experienced in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a communiqué from the Ministry of the Interior and Security consulted Monday by CPA. 

“As of April 5th, 2025: 23 deaths, 46 people hospitalized and several houses washed away in the communes of Mont-Ngafula, Ngaliema and Barumbu, as well as the interruption of drinking water supplies in some districts of the provincial city of Kinshasa. On April 6th, 2025: 10 deaths, more than 200 households flooded in the communes of Limete, Matete and Masina, and road traffic was interrupted for a day on boulevard Lumumba, at the N’djili bridge”, read the press release. Under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior and Security, a Crisis Management Unit has been set up, with the participation of the Ministries of Infrastructure and Public Works, Portfolio, Finance, Water Resources and Electricity, as well as the City-Province of Kinshasa. It decided to immediately implement an evacuation plan and mobilize intervention teams for preliminary assistance, including the provision of temporary shelters. 

At the emergency meeting held on Sunday April 6, the source added, in the presence of the Commissioner General of the Congolese National Police, the Kinshasa City Commander and the Civil Protection services, it was decided to involve the Army, the Directorate General of Migration (DGM), the Riverways Authority (RVF), the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DGDA) and other services to ensure the transportation of people living in submerged areas to identified reception sites. “Four reception sites have been set up, namely: Lumumba Institute: 115 families taken in; Kitomesa (N’Djli): 100 families taken in; Kimwenza: 70 families taken in; Tata Raphael Stadium: rehabilitation”, explained the press release. 

The source also indicated that the humanitarian community had been mobilized to guarantee effective assistance to those affected. The Ministry of the Interior and Security was keen to reassure the population that the Government of the Republic was taking appropriate charge of this crisis.  CPA/
