Kinshasa: Adoption of the report of a commission charged to investigate the causes of floods

Kinshasa, May 28th, 2025 (CPA).- The report of the commission charged investigate the causes of floods  of April 5th-6th, 2025 has been adopted on Wednesday by provincial deputies during a plenary session held at the Provincial Assembly of Kinshasa (APK) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. ‘The Kinshasa Provincial Assembly has adopted on Wednesday the report of the commission investigate the causes and damage of the floods caused by torrential rains that hit the city on April 5th-6th, 2025, after the commission’s chair provided answers and clarifications regarding the recommendations raised by the capital’s elected officials,’ has declared the deputy Levi Mbuta, president of the APK. According to Mr. Mbuta, the present report adopted is accompanied by recommendations addressed in particular to the governor of the city concerning disaster management, development and infrastructure. ‘The demolition of unauthorised buildings located in flood-prone or high-risk areas is indicated in the recommendations addressed to the city governor, as is the census and publication of the annual report on illegal buildings by municipality,’ he has said. The implementation of regular sanitation works, cleaning, drainage and dredging of the N’djili, Congo and other rivers at least four times a year, and the construction of dykes on all rivers in Kinshasa have been also among the recommendations made to the governor of Kinshasa. In this report, which presented and adopted, the provincial deputies have called on the competent authorities to undertake major anti-erosion works in the Punda, Bangu, Ngomba-Kikusa, Lonzo and Djelo Binza neighbourhoods, before seeking the support of municipalities in drawing up their local development plans, in partnership with the state and donors. During this plenary session, two major items were on the agenda. These included the presentation, review and adoption of the report of the special commission charged to investigate the causes of  the deadly floods of last April 5-6th as well as the report of the Assembly’s special commission on accounting and resource control for the period from October 1st, 2024 to  March 29th, 2025.
