Kinshasa: Effectiveness of oncohaematology care at the University Clinics

Kinshasa, July 2nd, 2025 (CPA) . – Care in ‘oncohematology,’ a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancers of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system, has been  demonstrated  to be effective at the University Clinics of Kinshasa (CUK) during a scientific morning on oncohematology in the Democratic Republic of Congo. ‘Today, through this meeting, we want to state loud and clear that patients are diagnosed and treated in oncohematology right here. To date, clinical studies are being conducted with a constant focus on scientific rigor and improving our practices,’ said Dr Djenny Mulanga, a rheumatologist at the CUK.  Dr. Mulanga explained that oncohematology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system, as well as other non-cancerous blood diseases.  She emphasized that this day dedicated to reviewing the state of care for oncohaematology pathologies at the University Clinics of Kinshasa is part of an approach that is both scientific and humane. « Scientific, because we believe it is essential to highlight the research efforts and clinical data from our daily work. Human, because behind every figure, every protocol, there are lives, patients, stories of struggle, hope and dignity, » she said. According to her, despite the many challenges linked to the country’s context, the haematology department has shown resilience and determination.  ‘Our teams fight every day, often with limited resources, to ensure dignified care for our patients. And while some progress has been made at the national level, much remains to be done to guarantee equitable and sustainable access to specialized haematology care,’ the specialist continued.  Organized by the CUK haematology-rheumatology department, the day will be divided into three sessions, the first of which will be devoted to malignant myeloid blood disorders, the second to lymphoid blood disorders, followed by a discussion between participants.

Finally, experts in anatomical pathology and medical imaging will contribute to the discussion on these essential aspects of diagnosis in oncohaematology.
