President Tshisekedi, during his speech
Kinshasa, April 8th, 2025 (CPA) – A crisis meeting on the floods that have hit Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, will soon be held to help the victims, President Tshisekedi announced on Monday, at the opening of the General Assembly of the Superior Council of the Magistracy (CSM).
“I would like to express, on my own behalf and on behalf of the entire nation, my deep emotion, my most sincere compassion and my unwavering solidarity with the bereaved families and the victims. In this hour of grief and anguish, I want to tell them that the Republic will not abandon them. Very soon, I will personally hold a crisis meeting with the members of the government”, announced the Congolese Head of State. The guarantor of the nation and the proper functioning of its institutions also highlighted the actions already taken by the government to manage the consequences of the floods.
“I know that the central government and the authorities of the city-province of Kinshasa have done everything in their power to assess the scale of the situation and take the necessary emergency measures without delay. No effort will be spared to relieve suffering, protect lives and prevent further tragedies”, he said, “I cannot fail to mention the shocking tragedy that has just struck our capital”, he added. The President of the Republic painted a bleak picture of this natural disaster, whose negative impact still hangs over the capital city.
“Following the torrential rains which fell on Kinshasa, the west of the city was severely affected by flooding of rare violence, caused in particular by an overflow of water. This disaster swept away more than a hundred of our compatriots in the mud, plunged entire families into mourning, plunged hundreds of others into distress and paralyzed a large part of the city’s traffic”, he added, asking the audience to observe a minute’s silence in memory of the victims. According to provisional official figures, 33 people were killed, 48 others were hospitalized and significant material damage was caused, including sunken houses and damaged roads. CPA/
