Kisangani, June 2nd, 2025 (CPA) – The heads of neighborhoods, blocks and avenues of a commune in Kisangani, capital of Tshopo in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), were invited on Monday to a weekly talk on security vigilance in the run-up to the independence festivities. ‘The enemies of Independence Day on June 30th are preparing to rob and hold up the population in order to make the festivities even better. We must block their path using the legal means at our disposal, provided that you can inform us in real time’, said Martin Luther Lituambela, Deputy Mayor of the Makiso commune. This municipal authority acknowledged the existence of enormous security challenges in his commune, which is home to provincial and even national and international institutions. He pointed to a number of recent cases of insecurity. ‘At the Millénaire hospital, nurses were raped by armed robbers, as was the case at the village paediatric hospital,’ he said. As a result, the neighborhood chiefs have been instructed to present all the trouble spots in their areas in writing during the meeting to be held on Tuesday, so that the municipal authorities can take all the necessary security measures, while drawing the attention of the Makiso municipal staff whose children may be among the troublemakers. ‘The day the child of a Makiso commune official is caught among the thugs, the child will be released, but the parent who is a commune official will be prosecuted and arrested’, warned Martin Luther Lituambela. With everyone’s help, the commune of Makiso will achieve its two (2) objectives, namely sanitation and security,’ concluded the deputy mayor.
