‘MetroKin’ in Kinshasa: the first phase plans to transport 520,000 people a day

Kinshasa, May 12th, 2025 (CPA) – The first phase of an urban transport project called ‘MetroKin’ plans to transport five hundred and twenty thousand (520,000) people a day in the city of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, an administrative source has told us on Monday.  ‘In the case of MetroKin, we have carried out studies showing that in the first phase of implementation of this project, we are going to transport 520,000 people a day. And this will increase by twelve per cent (12%) each year’, has indicated Eric Onepunga, General Director of MetroKin.  ‘For this project to come to fruition today, three things need to be done. The most important of these is to clear the public rights of way. It is up to the State to clear the public rights of way. These are the areas where the project will be carried out, from the central station to N’djili airport.  We are ready to start work in November’, he has added. Mr Onepunga has pointed out that an interface contract would also have to be signed between MetroKin, the National Transport Office (Onatra) and the Airways Authority (RVA). He has explained that Onatra, which is a partner in the project, will have to continue working to ensure traffic flows between the capital and the province of Central Kongo. As for the RVA, it will have to cede station space to MetroKin. ‘In a railway project, there is infrastructure, rolling stock, civil engineering and signalling. The government of the Republic has already made 20 million dollars available to compensate all those directly affected by this project. We took two years to list the households to be compensated’, has continued the project manager. MetroKin is a limited company incorporated under Congolese law, created on January 28th, 2022 by the Steering Committee for the Reform of Public Companies (COPIREP).
