Metrology: The government called upon to support practical initiatives with subsidies (an association)

Kinshasa, May 25th, 2025(CPA) – The government was called upon on Friday to support activities to raise public awareness of practical metrology initiatives through subsidies, in the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of World Metrology Day celebrated on May 20th each year, according to a press release consulted by the CPA. ‘We are asking the government to support initiatives to raise public awareness of training in practical metrology activities in DR Congo with subsidies,’ reads the press release from the Association for the Promotion of Metrology and Standardization in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Apromen).  The association of mythologists is also calling on the government to set up a commission to examine the work carried out by the two chambers of parliament since 2014, and to monitor it until the relevant legislation is enacted and the relevant implementing measures put in place.  In a press release signed by Bertin Ntumba Bululu, the association’s executive chairman, Apromen recommended that the government implement a vision of economic development through economic diversification, taking into account issues relating to national, regional and international economic integration.

Overview of metrology activities in the DRC

However, the association revealed that legal metrology activities are the responsibility of the Ministry of Industry, and are characterized by a lack of legislation. Current practice is governed by texts that have lost their relevance, including a 1910 Royal Decree; a very weak and atypical practice in view of the current challenges of economic integration, modernization and emergence, characterized by: the use of inappropriate tools such as Sakombi, Mopiko and Meka in everyday trade.  ‘This situation tarnishes the image of national trade, is a source of conflict and a brake on economic integration and sustainable development’, the source said.  Metrology is a discipline concerned with the methods and techniques used to obtain the greatest precision in measurements.  Every year on May 20th, APROMEN members celebrate the vital role played by all those who work for the development of metrology.

The development and practice of metrology throughout the world

This includes its role as a tool for promoting quality, safety, equity, economic justice and well-being for all. The theme chosen for World Metrology Day 2025 is: Measurements ‘for all times and all peoples’, concluded the source.ACP/
