National Pedagogical University: Students made aware of the need to pay taxes

Kinshasa, May 29th, 2025 (CPA) – Students at the National Pedagogical University (UPN) in the Democratic Republic of Congo were made aware on Thursday of the importance of paying taxes during a conference organised by the Directorate-General of Taxes (DGI) and the Congo-conscience dynamic.

‘I have always recommended that children should be taught about taxation from primary school level, or even nursery school. Children need to understand from an early age that if their country is to develop, they have to contribute by paying taxes’, said Barnabé Muakadi, Director General of the DGI.

The Director General of the Directorate General of Taxes insisted on the inescapable character of taxes in the economic sovereignty and independence of a State, which, according to him, tax revenues allow in particular to finance education, health, infrastructures, security as well as national solidarity.

‘The DGI had mobilized one billion 900 million US dollars in 2020; 3 billion 200 million in 2021; 5 billion 200 million in 2022; 5 billion 3 million in 2023 and 6 billion in 2024, which is an evolving curve’, he added.  He also called on the government to tackle structural challenges, including the digitalization of the tax system, the introduction of remote payment, and the automation of processes through integrated management software.  ‘The aim is to keep human intervention in the tax chain to a minimum in order to enhance transparency and efficiency,’ says Barnabé Muakadi.  ‘In view of this managerial performance and the patriotism embodied by the DGI, we have drawn up a support project to help raise awareness of tax compliance’, said Stanis Meinj, President of Dynamique Congo-Conscience, which co-organised the event.
