Kinshasa, May 10th, 2025 (CPA) – Iran and Niger have strengthened their security cooperation. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the two countries during a two-day visit by an Iranian delegation to Niamey, the international media have reported on Saturday. ‘After Russia, Turkey and Morocco, Niger is moving a step closer to Iran to strengthen its security cooperation in the fight against terrorism and crime’, has said Niger’s Minister in charge of the Interior, General Toumba. A working session has been held between the Nigerian Interior Minister, General Toumba, and the Commander General of the Iranian security forces, Rezaei Radan, leading to the signing of a memorandum of understanding for training and information sharing.
Uranium, the key to cooperation with Iran
What may be of interest to Niamey is Iranian equipment, in particular drones,’ explains Niger’s Minister in charge of the Interior. According to him, Tehran has its eye on Niger’s uranium. Niger needs new money, and more than 1,000 tons of uranium that could not be exported are stored in the north of the country, he stressed. This visit comes just over a year after the Nigerien Prime Minister’s visit to Tehran. Since the coup d’état in July 2023, Niger has been consolidating its new partnerships.ACP/
