Oslo: Strengthening the role of women in conflict prevention

Kinshasa: May 15th, 2025, (CPA) – Strengthening the role of women in conflict prevention and peace-building was the focus of the Conference of the Network of Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points held in Oslo, capital of Norway, from May 13th to 14th, 2025, under the theme: ‘deepening WPS commitments: innovating and adapting to ensure peace and security’. ‘The Oslo Women, Peace and Security conference is part of ongoing international efforts to strengthen the role of women in conflict prevention and peace building. The theme of women, peace and security is a fundamental pillar in the promotion of women’s participation in peace and security processes’, said Annie Matundu, champion of Resolution 1325 in the DRC.  ‘My contribution to this conference includes perspectives on the future role of women in conflict resolution, testimonies on the progress made, and even concrete commitments to strengthen their inclusion. We can improve the effectiveness of conflict resolution and peace building initiatives, and ensure that women’s contributions are fully recognized and supported’, she added. The challenges faced by women in participating in peace negotiations were recalled, as were the opportunities open to them to play a role in promoting stability.

‘Despite the many challenges, women in the DRC have significant opportunities to play a key role in peace negotiations and in promoting stability. Women peacemakers can be engaged in community and national dialogues. Their inclusion in decision-making processes can ensure that women’s specific concerns are taken into account, making negotiations more comprehensive and effective’, said Anny Modi, Executive Director of Afia Mama.  The aim of the thematic meeting in Oslo was to develop a shared and in-depth understanding of the importance of peace in the context of conflict. Entry points for the inclusion and support of women’s organisations were raised. To this end, the international community and local actors were invited to promote a more stable and equitable future in the DRC. To mark the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325, the participants called for women’s participation in peace processes, peace-building and conflict resolution and prevention, in line with the UN’s Shared Commitment to Increase Women’s Full, Equal and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes.
