Public video surveillance recommended for regulating road traffic in Kinshasa

Kinshasa, April 24th,2025 (CPA).- The use of public video surveillance in the regulation of road traffic was recommended on Thursday, during the defence of a thesis at the University of Kinshasa (Unikin), in the centre of the capital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “The sustainable improvement of road practices in Kinshasa requires truly two-way communication, which consists in separating the prohibited behaviour of police officers and drivers through the use of public video surveillance”, has said Joel Zampungu, the recipient of the award. To this end, he advocated an awareness campaign on the behaviour of police officers and drivers, including the video surveillance system with “Ezviz hb8 2k+” and body cameras.  For him, these devices will make it possible to monitor interactions and encourage changes in attitude. “This research study reveals a complex dynamic where police officers’ power practices and drivers’ resistance strategies intersect, reflecting sharply contrasting perceptions between the two groups”, he has argued. The author of the thesis considered that the power instituted by the traffic police manifests itself in the strict or arbitrary application of the high way code. He chose as his theme: “interaction between police officers and drivers in Kinshasa: analysis of power dynamics and resistance strategies”.
