Rome: DRC can become a ‘leader in the field of nuclear energy’ (An Italian deputy)

Rome, June 25th, 2025 (CPA).- The Democratic Republic of Congo has the capacity to become a leader in the field of nuclear energy, an Italian deputy has explained on Wednesday on the side-lines of the General Assembly on nuclear energy and the geostrategic role of Italy and Europe, held in Rome. « The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has a key role to play in the nuclear energy project, with all the resources it possesses. It has the capacity to become a leader in energy and can participate in this project, bringing economic benefits to its population and that of Europe, and vice versa, » has declared Dr. Cristina Di Silvio, representative of parliamentary interest in the Chamber of Deputies and the European Parliament. « I believe that Africa has a very important strategic place in the nuclear energy project in Italy and Europe. Currently, Africa is interesting for nuclear energy, not only as a fundamental solution, but also as a way to emerge alongside Europe and America, » she has added, during a conference on nuclear energy and the geostrategic role of Italy and Europe organised by the Italian cultural association Colturazione (Cultivation).

Angello Lucarella, president of the Colturazione association

« We are Colturazione (Cultivation), a cultural association, and we are presenting the general situation of nuclear energy in Italy to reflect on the energy supply situation and product transformation, as well as geopolitics. We are reflecting on the future importance of Italy’s Mattei plan with Africa. We are going to propose the Democratic Republic of Congo for this project, and we hope that our proposal will be accepted, » has indicated Angello Lucarella, president of the Colturazione association, one of the organisers of the conference.  And to add: « We are living through a change of era, and talking about nuclear energy is therefore a topical, necessary and sensitive subject. Other geostrategic issues also arise. It is essential to understand Italy’s and Europe’s vision for economic development in the coming decades. »  For Mr Lucarella, this conference on nuclear energy is a reference point and a framework for implementing strategies in this field. ‘The General Assembly on Nuclear Energy, promoted by Colturazione, is therefore intended to be a reference on the subject and a contribution to the debate in order to understand where we are going and what global strategies to adopt, highlighting (…) the advantages and disadvantages of the complexity of our society,’ he has said.

The participants at the General Assembly

Speaking about DRC in relation to the Mattei Plan during the meeting, Dr Erica Ratelli from the association « Yes for Europe ‘(Confederation of Young Entrepreneurs) has remember : ’Certainly, in our relationship with DRC, we can work actively to train young people so that they are ready to collaborate with companies from the sectors we have analysed today or other areas, in order to promote trade between our companies and the human skills of this country. »  ‘We also wish to help the Democratic Republic of the Congo to better understand how we train young people in order to convey our current vision in schools. In addition, our companies will be able to regularly bring Congolese workers to Italy,’ she has added, before emphasising: ‘I therefore believe that this is a win-win project, (…) a visionary project that will promote their talents’.  ‘Of course, if Italy also invests in the nuclear sector, it is clear that we could certainly establish relations in this area,’ she has concluded. This conference, which has brought together more than 40 experts and has taken place in two stages, has addressed issues of ethics, health, the environment, economic development, regulation, defence and geopolitics.
