South Kivu: Humanitarian aid distributed to landslide victims in Fizi

Kinshasa, June 2nd, 2025 (CPA) – Humanitarian assistance, consisting of food and non-food items, has been distributed to the victims of a landslide in the territory of Fizi, in South Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a press release from the Ministry of Social Affairs, which reached the CPA on Monday. ‘A delegation led by Ergi Kissima, an advisor and expert from the Ministry in charge of Social Affairs, Humanitarian Action and National Solidarity, distributed food and non-food items at the weekend, including sheet metal, nails and other accessories essential for rebuilding homes washed away by the rain, to victims of the landslide in Kasaba village, in Fizi, following the torrential rains that fell on the night of 8 to 9 May 2025,’ it read.

According to the source, this team, deployed as a matter of urgency by Nathalie Aziza Munana, Minister of Social Affairs, provided assistance to the victims of this disaster, which resulted in the loss of human life, considerable material damage and the destruction of many households, leaving several families homeless.  For his part, Jean-Jacques Elakano, the vice-governor of South Kivu, quoted in the press release, said that this was an unprecedented humanitarian tragedy in Fizi territory. He also expressed his gratitude to the Head of State, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, who, as soon as he was informed of the situation, immediately instructed the Prime Minister, Judith Suminwa Tuluka, to dispatch Minister Munana, who is in charge of Social Affairs, to lead this emergency intervention in Kasaba, which is almost on the border between South Kivu and Tanganyika.

‘The government has shown its solidarity with the people of Kasaba. We have distributed food and non-food items, as well as a substantial sum of money’, he said. Théophile Bashusho, national deputy for the Fizi territory, quoted in the press release, praised the government’s responsiveness through the Ministry in charge of Social Affairs, Humanitarian Action and National Solidarity, which was headed by Nathalie-Aziza Munana. ‘The government was very flexible. We saw that in a short space of time only one action was carried out. Even so, there are too many priorities in the country, and the government is taking action. What has happened to us is the consequence of climate change, and we need to do everything we can to plant trees everywhere, with the involvement of the Fizi community’, he said.

This rapid and coordinated mobilization demonstrates the government’s commitment to coming to the aid of the affected populations and offering them concrete support to rebuild their lives after this tragedy, the press release points out. The torrential rains that hit the village of Kasaba caused major damage, including the overflowing of the river, loss of human life and the destruction of many households, leaving several families homeless.
