Kalemie, June 22nd, 2025 (CPA).- Fifty Mai-Mai militiamen from the Mutono group surrendered to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) during a ceremony held in the village of Murusi, Kansambala chiefdom, Moba territory, Tanganyika province in the east of the country, the CPA learned on Saturday from administrative sources.
« These fifty Mai-Mai militiamen from the Mutono group active in Murusi surrendered to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo amulets and other philosophical and magical items that made them invulnerable to bullets from military weapons, as well as several bladed weapons including arrows, machetes and bows, » said Victor Kanfwa, administrator of the Moba territory.
He added, ‘The people of Murusi welcomed the surrender of the Mai-Mai from the Mutono gang and the efforts made by the local authorities of the Armed Forces of the Republic in Tanganyika to restore lasting peace and security to our region so that we can go about our work in the fields in peace.’ He called on other militiamen from this group to also come to their senses, like those who have surrendered and will be reintegrated into society. The surrender ceremony, which was presided over by Colonel Alex Munyalizi, commander of the 22nd Rapid Response Brigade and Operation Usalama based in Kalemie, was attended by several political, administrative and traditional authorities from the territory. The gang led by warlord Mutono is one of the most active, having spread death and desolation in the Moba territory for several years, it is recalled.
