The exceptional increase in the AfDB’s capital delights its outgoing president

Abidjan, May 26th, 2025 (CPA) – The African Development Bank (AfDB) has seen an exceptional increase in its capital, which rose from 93 billion to 318 billion US dollars between 2015 and 2025, has indicated Adesina Akinwumi, the outgoing president of the continent’s financial institution, at a luncheon with the press in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Monday.

“African countries have started contributing to the Bank, such as Morocco (which) has donated 5 million dollars, Algeria 10 million, Kenya has pledged 20 million dollars and South Sudan has pledged 2 million dollars as its contribution”, has explained Mr Akinwumi, moments before the opening of the AfDB’s 51st Annual Meetings, scheduled to take place from May 26th to 30th.

Thanks to the AfDB’s support, projects for the continent’s development have been able to mobilise USD 225 billion, » he has rejoiced. The Nigerian President of the AfDB, a former Nigerian Minister in charge of Agriculture, has estimated that Africa has everything it needs for its development: the youth of its population, agriculture, critical minerals essential to the fight against climate change and the energy transition, the advantages that can be drawn from the sun, ‘We need to look at ourselves (…) Let’s apply good governance with a global vision’, has said Mr Akinwumi.

This outgoing President is the 8th to head the AfDB. There are 5 registered candidates for his succession. ‘There will be a change of management, but the AfDB’s mission persists and continues,’ Mr Akinwumi has insisted. The Democratic Republic of Congo is eagerly awaited at the AfDB’s 51st Annual Meetings. The country governor, Doudou Fwamba, is leading the Congolese delegation at the meeting.
