Upgrading of National Highway 1: 142 km of the Nguba – Lubudi section passable

Kinshasa, April 9th, 2025 (CPA)- 142 km of the Nguba-Lubudi road section on National Highway 1 in Lualaba province in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo is already passable, according to a press release from the Congolese Major Works Agency (ACGT) received by the CPA on Wednesday. ‘A team of engineers carried out a site visit to upgrade the Mbujimayi-Nguba road on National Route 1. The visit revealed that 142 km of the Nguba-Lubudi road section, the 6th lot of the Mbujimayi Nguba road, is already passable, and nearly 20 km more is at sub-base level. And by the next dry season, the yield will have doubled’, it said.

The project stretches over 845 km, from Mbujimayi in Kasaï-Oriental and from Nguba to Lubudi in Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Of this stretch, five bridges under construction have reached a 35% completion rate, the right-of-way has been extended to 50 km, and the base course covers 19 km, of which 1,250 km has already been paved. However, the work carried out by Grec7, which opened on February 27th, 2025, has resulted in the opening up of the right-of-way over 15 km, the resurfacing and levelling of the roadbed over 10 km, and drainage work amounting to 25%. It should be noted that the aim of this 846 km rehabilitation project between Mbujimayi in Kasaï-Oriental and Nguba in Lualaba is to cover the entire length, i.e. more than 3,000 km, with asphalt in order to facilitate the movement of people and their goods, and to provide a link between the east and west of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
