World Plastic Bag Free Day: the recycling recommended as a sustainable solution (An expert)

Kinshasa, July 3rd, 2025 (CPA).- The plastic recycling as a sustainable solution has been recommended on Thursday in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, by an expert during an interview on the occasion of the World Plastic Bag Free Day celebrated on July 3rd of each year.  ‘Contrary to popular belief, burning plastics pollutes the air, while burying them pollutes the soil. The best way to get rid of plastic bags is to recycle them,’ has declared Desire Konga Wanguma, an expert in environment and sustainable development.  “The plastic bags that litter the streets of the capital after use pollute the water, soil and atmosphere, negatively affecting the environment”, he has added. « On the one hand, the used plastic bags buried in the ground promote the spread of erosion in certain neighbourhoods and, on the other hand, contaminate the water table. Those that are thrown into waterways cause eutrophication, a phenomenon characterised by the blocking of the surface of a river, which creates an imbalance in marine ecosystems, » the source has indicated. Established in 2010, this Day aims to raise awareness of the problems caused by the use of plastic bags on the environment. On average, a plastic bag is manufactured in 1 second, used for 20 minutes and takes several hundred years to degrade completely. A disaster for our environment.  CPA/Ferha Ntumba/RS
