2023 elections, a new stage in the democratic process in DRC

Kinshasa, April 31, 2021 (CPA).- The special representative of the United Nations General Secretary in DRC, Ms. Bintou Keita, declared on Wednesday in her first intervention before the UN Security Council, that 2023 electoral process represents a new critical stage in the process of democratic transition, institutional consolidation and stabilization of this country.

Before the Security Council, the head of the United Nations stabilization mission in DRC (MONUSCO) recalled the opportunities to be seized in DRC, in particular the formation of a new government with which the UN is collaborating « to support the reforms indispensable « . “Momentum for change can be built”, she said. According to a document from the UN mission that reached CPA the same day, Ms. Keita said she had stressed to the Congolese authorities the need for the new government to act quickly on several priorities common to the United Nations, namely, the reform of the United Nations. ‘Army and Police; taking charge of the protection of civilians; the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of combatants; strengthening justice, particularly transitional justice; and the start of preparations for 2023 elections. The UN envoy also underlined, having told all Congolese stakeholders, the need to act within the framework of the country’s Constitution and to organize the elections in a timely and inclusive manner, respecting the electoral calendar.
