Kinshasa, July 17th, 2021 (CPA).- The project manager Jules Kitadi Munganga was, Thursday, doctor of science at the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN), with the mention « Great distinction », at the end of the defense publication of a doctoral thesis entitled « Determination of the content of mineral elements and the anti-epanocytic activity of medicinal plants used in the province of Kwilu (DRC) ».
According to the recipient, this thesis contributes to the enhancement of the biodiversity of the flora of the province of Kwilu by studying the antidepanocytic activity and the determination of the mineral content of plants used in its traditional medicine.
This study is part of the perspective of enhancing biodiversity, by verifying whether the plant species used in traditional medicine in the treatment of SS anemia, in the province of Kwilu, have sickle cell properties, a-t -he assures.
He specified that this approach aimed to broaden the range of plants that can be used during the treatment of sickle cell anemia and a supply of essential mineral elements to regulate the level of hemoglobin in sickle cell patients who lose it during their crises, before to formulate recommendations related to the consumption of extracts of certain plants, in particular to strengthen the hemoglobin level.
The recipient carried out an ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants used by traditional healers in the management of sickle cell disease in the province of Kwilu, by testing the antifalcemic and antioxidant activity of these plants and by confirming the antidepanocytic activity of these plants.
This doctoral study also determined the minimum concentration of normalization by the total extracts of these plants in order to compare their activities with those of other plants already studied, by retaining the plants among the most active and those that have been mentioned etc.
The applicant pointed out that this doctoral study identified 35 (thirty-five) medicinal plants used by traditional healers in the province of Kwilu for the management of sickle cell disease.
“The Faculty of Sciences, which is in the integration of the higher education system of License-Master-Doctorate (LMD) within the framework of the Project of education of quality and relevance of the teaching of the secondary and university levels (PEQPESU), has need several doctoral theses to strengthen the faculty in order to serve other faculties across the country well”, declared, at the end of the defense, the dean of the Faculty of Sciences of UNIKIN, the Prof. Musesa Landa.
