Launch of an inter-agency emergency response plan for Central African refugees in DRC

Kinshasa, April 31, 2021 (CPA).- Seventeen humanitarian partners launched an inter-agency emergency response plan on Tuesday, coordinated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Government of the Democratic Republic Congo in order to meet the complex needs of 92,000 refugees from the Central African Republic (CAR) recently arrived in DRC and nearly 100,000 members of host communities, said a UNHCR press release received on Wednesday at CPA.

This launched inter-agency plan will enable humanitarian partners to raise USD 69 million to be able to provide emergency shelter, sanitation facilities, access to health care, food, water and household items essentials such as mosquito nets and blankets.

For the permanent secretary of the National Commission for Refugees (CNR), Eric Mukandila Malu, who presided over this ceremony on behalf of the Congolese government, the Central African refugees who have recently arrived in DRC are mainly accommodated with host families or are building makeshift shelters along the Ubangi River. The most pressing needs are food, shelter, basic household items and sanitation.

For her part, UNHCR representative in DRC, Liz Kpam Ahua, issued an urgent appeal to the international community to mobilize funds so that humanitarian organizations can provide life-saving assistance to Central African refugees and their hosts.

« With the support of humanitarian partners, it is possible to mobilize more resources to enable us together to better cope with this humanitarian emergency », she concluded. ACP/ Kayu/KJI
