MONUSCO concerned about calls for violence in Nord Kivu province

Kinshasa, April 8th, 2021 (CPA).– The special representative of the General Secretary of the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, expressed on Wednesday in the report of the weekly meeting of MONUSCO, its concern at the multiplication of calls for violence and hatred against humanitarian workers and national and international institutions in the cities of Lubero, Beni and Butembo in Nord Kivu.

Bintou Keita, who recognizes the difficulties facing the population of this part of the country in the context of the upsurge in attacks against civilians, underlined his attachment to freedom of expression, opinion and peaceful demonstration.

For the Head of MONUSCO, these freedoms can be exercised legitimately without any call for violence against individuals or international organizations.

MONUSCO, reassures the UN General Secretary special representative in DRC, is mobilized with its Congolese partners to support efforts to protect civilian populations exposed to violence from all sides, killings and others. She reaffirmed the will of the UN mission in DRC to support, in particular, FARDC and PNC in the restoration of state authority in this part of DRC.

The fight against ADF requires more than ever the joint efforts of national and provincial institutions, all political actors and international partners with the support of the population, she said.
