Kinshasa, May 22nd, 2021 (CPA).- The President of the Republic Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo took part Friday, by videoconference, in his capacity as President in office of the African Union, in the World Summit on Health, organized jointly by the European Commission and Italy, which currently chairs the G20, we read on the twitter account of the Presidency of the Republic.
This summit, which brought together in Rome, the leaders of the G20 countries and the main international organizations, resulted in the adoption of a resolution calling for improved solidarity between countries to improve vaccination against Covid-19 and better prevent pandemics to come. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, insisted that the promises of financing and donations of vaccines be followed « by concrete actions ».
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on behalf of France, the donation of « at least 30 million doses of different vaccines » to the COVAX program, the global mechanism for supplying vaccines to poor countries, from here to the end of 2021. The director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, for her part, unveiled a large-scale plan for her institution, estimated at $ 50 billion, with the goal of vaccinating at least 40% of the global population by the end of the year and 60% by the end of 2022 to enable sustainable global economic recovery.
This summit, it is recalled, was an opportunity for G20 leaders, heads of international and regional organizations and representatives of global health organizations to share lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was based on the global response to the coronavirus, a conference that last year helped mobilize nearly 16 billion euros from donors around the world for universal access to treatments, tests and vaccines against coronavirus; on existing work of multilateral institutions and frameworks, including the World Health Organization and international health regulations as well as on other health initiatives and processes, including those taking place within the G7 and of the G20. This summit was attended by G20 member countries, Heads of State or Government, leaders of international and regional organizations as well as representatives of global health actors. ACP/
