North Kivu: Need for substantial assistance to pastoralists affected by the volcanic eruption of Nyiragongo

Goma, July 3rd, 2021 (CPA) .- Mr. Adrien Kachonya, Head of the provincial division of agriculture, fishing and livestock in North Kivu, during an interview with the ACP on Thursday, expressed the need assistance for pastoralists whose farms were swallowed up by the recent eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in May.

According to this public administration executive, this natural calamity consumed thousands of animals on the path of the lava flow, which must be repopulated by necessarily calling on substantial means.

Beyond the charred animals, said division chief Kachonya, the only slaughterhouse in Nyiragongo territory was also destroyed by lava.

The affected areas are located in the territory of Nyiragongo, part in the territory of Masisi and the territory of Rutshuru, whose fields and farms have been particularly invaded by the slag released by the Nyiragongo volcano.

These slags, he explained, intoxicate the herbs that the animals graze which, in turn, are poisoned after having grazed them until they are killed.

The head of the agriculture, fishing and livestock division of North Kivu also pleaded for the relaunch of animal vaccination campaigns against the various diseases that decimate them, to secure their desired repopulation after the horrors of this natural disaster.

He finally called on the provincial and national governments, as well as NGOs and people of good will to kindly place particular emphasis on the need to lend a hand to pastoralists, especially those affected by the damage caused by the lava, in order to allow them to get up. ACP/NIG
