Drought is on the verge of becoming the next pandemic, UN says

Kinshasa, June 25th, 2021 (CPA).– The drought is on the verge of becoming the next pandemic in the world which has so far no vaccine to cure it, indicates a report of the United Nations (UN) entitled  » drought 2021 ”, recently published by the Central African News Agency.

Drought has become a widespread phenomenon that affects not only the arid regions of Africa but also the whole world. Other countries will suffer the direct consequences while many others may suffer indirectly, particularly through the rise in food prices, the source notes.

The increased risk of drought is explained by global warming and human activity, between s the misuse of water resources, intensive agriculture, deforestation as well as the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides, informs the UN report.

The same report indicates that drought is also a threat, among other things, for agriculture, transport, tourism, industry, energy production, the fight against poverty and population displacement.

To do this, the UN calls on states to regulate the way water is extracted, stored and used for preventive reasons. ACP/
