Kinshasa, October 19th, 2026 (ACP).– The consolidation of joint cooperation mechanisms between Angola and Namibia has been discussed on Monday in Luanda during a meeting between the Angolan President and his Namibian counterpart for the economic development of the populations of both countries, international media have reported. “This State visit aims to consolidate existing cooperation mechanisms, identify new investment opportunities and promote joint initiatives that will benefit the economies and people of both countries,” the sources have informed. The Namibian Head of State has arrived in Luanda last Sunday for a three-day State visit, aimed at deepening political, economic and social relations between the two countries. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has welcomed the members of the Angolan ministerial delegation, and President Joao Lourenço did the same for the members of the Namibian delegation.
“The programme for the visit includes the signing of legal cooperation agreements and press statements by the two heads of State, aiming to strengthen the partnership between the two countries,” they have added. The political and diplomatic relations between Angola and Namibia have been formalised on September 18th, 1990. Since then, the two countries are strengthening their ties of friendship and cooperation in various fields, notably energy, defence and security, transport, natural resources and regional integration. In the energy sector, the Baynes binational hydroelectric project, planned for the Cunene River on the border between the two countries, stands out. It is expected to have a generating capacity of 860 megawatts and represents an estimated investment of 1.5 billion US dollars.
The electricity interconnection between Angola and Namibia is also a strategic aspect of this partnership, as is cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector, border management and environmental protection. Furthermore, the Namibian President has laid a wreath at the foot of the sarcophagus of Angola’s first President, Antonio Agostinho Neto, paying tribute to the founder of the Angolan nation as a sign of respect and recognition of his historical legacy.
