AU: Democratic Republic of Congo re-elected as member of Peace and Security Council

Kinshasa, February 11th, 2026 (CPA). – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been re-elected as a member of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) for a two-year term, with 44 votes out of 48, in elections held on Wednesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, according to a statement from the Congolese Ministry in charge of Foreign Affairs. ‘DRC has just been re-elected, on Wednesday February 11th, 2026, in Addis Ababa, as a member of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union for a two-year term, with 44 votes out of 48,’ it is read in the  document of the Ministry in charge of Foreign Affairs.

This is its second consecutive term after the one that began on April 1st, 2024, the source has clarified. DRC had already assumed the rotating presidency of this permanent AU decision-making body responsible for conflict prevention, management and resolution in November 2024 and January 2026. This meeting has taken place ahead of the 39th Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for Saturday in Addis Ababa. It will be marked by the transfer of power between Angolan President Joao Lourenco and Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye to the position of AU Chairperson-in-Office. This re-election coincides with a difficult period in DRC, which has been shaken for decades by Rwandan aggression.

It is yet another responsibility that Felix Tshisekedi’s country has taken on, in addition to its non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. The Congolese government, committed to promote active diplomacy within the United Nations, will seize this opportunity to intensify its advocacy in favour of respect for international law and the sovereignty of nations, which is essential to reduce armed conflict in the world and in Africa in particular.
