DRC: 43 deaths and 46 hospitalised, provisional death toll from flooding in Kinshasa (Official)

Kinshasa, April 9th, 2025 (CPA) – Forty-three (43) deaths and 46 persons hospitalised, this is the death toll from the torrential rain that has felt on the night of April 4th to 5th in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to an official statement received on Tuesday by CPA. ‘The number of disaster victims accommodated in the various official reception sites amounts to 2,956 persons, while the number of deaths is 43, as well as 46 hospitalised’, it is read in the press release from the Ministry in charge of the Interior and Security. The Ministry in charge of the Interior has also informed that there has been “damage to essential infrastructure, in particular that of SNEL and Regideso”, and that the reparation works to ensure the continuity of the water and electricity supply are progressing rapidly. ‘All the HV and MV substations are in service, all Regideso plants are supplied, 121 out of 159 cabins are back in service, and 17 out of 23 feeders (medium-voltage lines) are back in service’, the source has made it clear. According to the document, the latest weather forecasts have indicated the continuation of bad weather, which calls for an increased vigilance, particularly in areas or municipalities identified as high risk, including N’djili, Matete, Barumbu, Selembao, Mont-Ngafula, Kisenso, Ngaliema, Limete, Makala and others.    » It is recommended to the population to avoid any non-essential displacement towards the affected zones or those identified as high risk, and to observe the following instructions: not to cross stagnant or flood waters to avoid the risks of drowning, electrocution and contamination (cholera, infections, etc.); to evacuate unstable slopes  and cracked houses to prevent collapses and landslides; to stay away from disconnected electric lines to avoid any danger of electrocution », the authority in charge of the interior has hammered. To this end, the Ministry has invited the population to show discipline, solidarity, and to carefully follow the instructions issued by the local authorities in the municipalities concerned.
