DRC: Ninety-nine territories mapped for the identification of victims of sexual violence

Kinshasa, February 9th, 2026 (CPA).- Ninety-nine (99) out of one hundred and forty-five (145) territories in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been mapped by the National Fund for the Reparation of Victims of Sexual Violence (Fonarev) for the identification of victims, according to this organization’s X account consulted on Monday.

‘Identifying the victims, is first and foremost mapping each incident across the entire national territory. Ninety-nine (99) territories out of one hundred and forty-five (145) have been affected, covering all the provinces of the country,’ it is read from the Fonarev X account. ‘Before any individual identification, FONAREV has carried out a rigorous mapping of incidents that occurred throughout DRC. This preliminary work consists of documenting the facts, tracing the history of conflicts, precisely localising the places of occurrence and situating the periods concerned,’ the source has added.

According to Fonarev, this fundamental step enables the establishment of a reliable frame of reference, which is essential for understanding the contexts of violence and guaranteeing that the identification of victims is based on verified, consistent and documented facts. ‘Because the reparation begins with an accurate understanding of what has actually happened, mapping is the first step in a fair, credible and equitable process,’ the same source has concluded.
