DRC-Rwanda: EU calls on US to enforce Washington Agreement (European Ambassador to DRC)

Kinshasa, December 11th, 2025 (CPA). – The Government of the United States of America (US), as guarantor of the Washington peace agreement, has been called upon by the European Union (EU) ambassador accredited to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to enforce compliance among the signatory countries, following a meeting on Thursday with the Congolese Head of State, Félix Tshisekedi, in the capital Kinshasa, according to the Congolese Presidency.   “Now that the Washington agreements are in place, it is important that their guarantor enforces them,” Nicolas Berlanga was quoted as saying after his meeting with President Tshisekedi at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Kinshasa.   He reassured the international community of its attention to the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC, for which Rwanda no longer has any open excuses.   “I think the international community is behind you, Rwanda have fewer and fewer excuses justifying its actions on the ground,” he added.

The European Union ambassador, whose term in the DRC had come to an end, had come to bid farewell to the Congolese president. “This meeting was an opportunity for the European diplomat to say goodbye and discuss the state of cooperation between the European Union and the DRC,” the source said. Among his last actions as ambassador, Nicolas Berlanga held two significant meetings in recent weeks: the Dialogue on the EU-DRC Partnership and the exchange and sharing session between ambassadors from countries that participated in the last EU-AU summit in Luanda, Angola. The first meeting resulted in the renewal of commitments between his delegation and the Congolese government, as well as the strengthening of the partnership through the development of various projects, particularly in the areas of security, the economy, and the environment.  The second meeting, devoted to evaluating the commitments made in Luanda, identified priority actions to consolidate the EU-AU partnership, such as the construction of corridors, the development of agriculture, and the local processing of critical minerals. He is leaving at a time when the EU and the US have just reaffirmed their joint commitment to supporting economic integration projects in the Great Lakes region, mainly the Lobito Corridor project.
