Kinshasa, May 7th, 2026 (CPA).– The Senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has announced the second-reading examination, scheduled for Friday, of the Washington Agreements concerning a peace accord with Rwanda and a multisectoral strategic cooperation agreement signed with the United States, according to a communiqué consulted Thursday by CPA.“The Senate Bureau invites honorable senators to attend the plenary session scheduled for Friday, May 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. sharp, in the International Conference Hall of the People’s Palace. Two items are on the agenda: 1. Examination of the general scheme of the draft law authorizing ratification of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the Government of the DRC and the Government of the United States of America. 2. Examination of the general scheme of the draft law authorizing ratification of the Peace Agreement between the DRC and Rwanda,” reads the official communiqué signed by Senate Rapporteur Senator Néfertiti Ngudianza. The National Assembly had adopted these draft laws on Monday, April 27, without debate, thus paving the way for a new diplomatic and economic phase for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, following validation of the report of its joint commission (Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security, Economic and Financial Affairs).
The agreements signed with the United States cover priority sectors such as critical minerals, energy, infrastructure, and security. These texts were declared admissible after their presentation by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner. According to the content of the agreements, the stated objective is twofold: to consolidate regional stability through the cessation of hostilities and to establish strengthened cooperation mechanisms, while attracting structural investments.
