DRC–Tanzania: Digitalization of border procedures considered to maximize public revenue

Kinshasa, June 18th, 2026 (CPA).- The establishment of a digital system for border procedures aimed at maximizing public revenue in South Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was discussed during a technical meeting held in Kinshasa between the Minister of Foreign Trade and the Tanzanian group Azania, according to a statement consulted by CPA on Thursday. “This system will make it possible to transform physical processes into digital ones in order to maximize public revenues, combat fraud and reduce revenue leakage,” said the Minister in charge of Foreign Trade, Julien Paluku Kahongya. According to the statement, this reform is part of the DRC’s commitments within the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the East African Community (EAC), while also consolidating the implementation of the Simplified Trade Regime (STR) designed to facilitate trade for small cross-border traders. In addition, South Kivu Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi Sadiki welcomed the central government’s support for this pilot project, which will benefit from the expertise of the Tanzanian group Azania to strengthen the fight against fraud and revenue leakage.

An evaluation of the system is scheduled within 45 days before its gradual deployment across the national territory, the statement added.
