Kinshasa, October 21st, 2026 (CPA): – The Ministry in charge of Sport of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced on Wednesday, in a press release, the organisation of a posthumous honours ceremony on Thursday at the Cinquantenaire Hospital in Kinshasa, in tribute to the international cyclist Miguel Masaisai, died on September 18th, 2026, in Ouesso (Republic of Congo) following a tragic accident.
“Miguel Masaisai’s memory will be honoured to the full extent of his commitment to the republic and to sport, through a posthumous award,” it is read. According to this official press release dated Tuesday, this ceremony is worth its weight in gold. “A courageous and determined athlete, Miguel Masaisai has raised DRC’s colours high throughout his continental journey, dedicated to promote peace and solidarity with the populations, victims of violence in the east of the country.” It is for this reason that the statement from the Ministry in charge of Sport has sought to clarify the situation, thereby cancelling the initial programme.
“The funeral vigil will take place on Wednesday, October 21st, during the ceremony of remembrance and tribute in the banquet hall of the Tata Raphael Stadium,” the statement has indicated. As mentioned, this statement has cancelled the original programme for the classical funeral tour. It is for this reason that DRC Ministry in charge of Sport and the Congolese Cycling Federation (Fecocy) have informed the national and international community, the world of sport, Congolese young people, sporting organisations and the general public that a funeral vigil will be held.
