Kinshasa, August 4th, 2025 (CPA).– A call for unity to combat tribalism was made to women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during the weekly meeting of members of a citizens’ organisation on Monday in Kinshasa.
« Tribalism, or ethnicism, is a form of discrimination based on ethnicity, which breeds conflict and social tension. That is why I call on you to unite to combat tribalism, overcome ethnic divisions and promote social cohesion,‘ has declared Rosine Musuka, coordinator of the NGO ’Bon vent ». « Women, as active members of society and often guardians of family and community values, can play a crucial role in the fight against tribalism. They can educate young people and adults about the dangers of this discrimination and promote the values of unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, » she has added.
This human rights defender also stressed that women can serve as mediators in inter-ethnic conflicts by promoting dialogue and understanding between groups. ‘By encouraging cultural diversity and the participation of all communities in social and economic life, women can help create spaces for meeting and exchange that foster trust and solidarity,’ she has said.
She also called on women to denounce acts of discrimination and violence based on ethnic origin, using the platforms available, and to organise themselves to make their voices heard. ‘They must also get involved in the fight against gender-based violence, offer support to victims and raise awareness of their rights,’ has emphasised Ms Musuka. She has insisted that the call for women’s unity is a call for mobilisation and action. ‘Through their unique role in society, women can play a key role in building a fairer, more peaceful and more united society, where ethnic divisions are no longer an obstacle to social cohesion,’ she has said.
