Ebola in Ituri: A modern center ready to receive first patients

Bunia, May 27th, 2026 (CPA).- The first patients suffering from Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) are expected to be admitted within the next 48 hours to the Ebola Treatment Centre (ETC), currently under rehabilitation at the Evangelical Medical Centre (CEME) in Bunia, capital of Ituri province, in the north-eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, CPA learnt Wednesday from health sources. “I have just held discussions with the WHO logistician supporting this process and I am highly impressed by the progress of the activities. I am convinced that, within the next 48 hours, the first patients will be treated here. We want to make this centre a reference facility where patients will benefit from adequate care and quality treatment,” declared Dr Richard Fosting, WHO Incident Manager. Dr Fosting stated that this new ETC, set up in a modern and imposing building, represents a major step forward in the response against the epidemic in this part of the country.

He indicated that, unlike the temporary wooden centers erected during the 2018–2020 epidemic, this modern infrastructure marks a decisive turning point in the health response strategy.

The WHO Incident Manager noted that the infrastructure should help address the issue of patient care, which has often been at the root of persistent mistrust between response teams and local communities. The center is being rehabilitated by the World Health Organization (WHO).  ACP/
