Ebola in Kisangani: Population urged to help break the chain of transmission

Kisangani, July 12th, 2026 (CPA). – The population of Kisangani, capital of Tshopo Province in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been urged to help stop the spread of Ebola by reporting all suspected symptomatic cases, the Minister of Public Health said on Sunday during a meeting devoted to the epidemiological situation. « Our message is to encourage the population to help stop the spread of the disease by reporting all symptomatic cases. Anyone presenting with a fever should immediately go to a health facility. All doctors and health centres have been instructed to report such cases for investigation. It is the response team that will determine whether samples need to be collected. Above all, however, we are here to mobilize the community, because the response must be embraced and supported by the population itself, » said Dr. Roger Kamba.

« The four cases we have identified are imported cases originating from Ituri. However, since these patients are now in Kisangani and are being treated here, we consider that the city has been affected, » he added, stressing the importance of close cooperation between communities and health services.

The Minister reassured the public that all health facilities in Kisangani have been placed on high alert to ensure the early detection and prompt management of suspected cases.

He said the health authorities are now focusing their efforts on identifying, tracing and monitoring everyone who has come into contact with confirmed patients. According to him, this strategy is one of the most effective measures for rapidly interrupting the chain of transmission. « All contacts who may have been exposed to these confirmed cases must be closely monitored. That is precisely why we are here: to establish a comprehensive response involving all operational pillars so that we can quickly bring the situation under control, » he explained. The meeting, chaired in the presence of Tshopo Governor Paulin Lendongolia and senior health officials, including the Secretary-General in charge of Health, the Inspector General of Health, the Incident Manager and technical response teams, provided an opportunity to assess the epidemiological situation and adopt urgent measures to contain the spread of the virus across the province.
