Europe-Africa Reverse Forum: DRC, a key player in technological innovation and sustainable development (Governor of the BCC)

Kinshasa, September 29th, 2025 (CPA) – The Democratic Republic of Congo was presented on Friday at the Europe-Africa Reverse Forum held in Brussels, Belgium, as a key player in technological innovation and sustainable development on the African continent by the governor of the Central Bank of Congo, according to a statement consulted by the CPA on Monday. “On Friday, September 26th, in Brussels, the Governor of the Central Bank of Congo (BCC), André Wameso, took part in the Europe Africa Investment Forum, where he gave an overview of the Congolese economy and highlighted the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a key player in technological innovation and sustainable development on the African continent,” the institution’s press release stated.

Robust GDP growth estimated at 6.3% in 2025, well above the regional average for sub-Saharan Africa. However, in the face of rapid population growth, this growth remains insufficient, requiring the continuation of the process of economic diversification, he has said. Governor Wameso as also emphasized the reforms undertaken to improve revenue collection, leading in particular to a spectacular increase in government revenues, which rose from an average of $4.2 billion between 2018 and 2020 to nearly $9.4 billion in 2024.

This significant jump in state revenues has been directed mainly towards the education sector through a proactive policy of free primary education.

This policy has had the advantage of breaking the cycle of inequality, particularly in favor of girls.

63% of women are economically active.

In his speech, the governor of the BCC revealed that 63% of women in DRC are economically active. Thanks to investments in education, he argued, these figures should continue to grow.

“Putting girls back in school means transforming the country and preparing the drivers of economic digitalization and financial inclusion,” has said André Wameso. He has recalled that in 2021, DRC adopted a digital code incorporating data protection, digital financial inclusion, strengthened cybersecurity, and regulation of electronic transactions. In light of this integration, the BCC intends to play a central role in accelerating digital transformation and monetary circulation and facilitating digital payments even in the most remote areas. For Governor Wameso, digitization is not a question of sovereignty for DRC, but of survival, as it will strengthen confidence, improve traceability, formalize the informal economy, and broaden the tax base. “Thanks to digitalization, DRC no longer wants to be seen solely as a reservoir of global raw materials, but as a major player in Africa’s digital transformation through education, particularly for women,” he has concluded.
