Haut-Katanga: the readjustment of the SMIG at the centre of discussions in Lubumbashi

Lubumbashi, February 11th, 2026 (CPA).- The readjustment of the guaranteed minimum wage (SMIG) has been the focus of discussions on Wednesday between legislators and the inter-union group of a mining company in Lubumbashi, Province of Haut-Katanga, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

« We have been invited to discuss the movement registered at the Provincial Assembly, where a group of workers demonstrated to demand the adjustment of the SMIG. So we needed to review the memo, and the discussions with the Vice-President of the Haut-Katanga Provincial Assembly, Liliane Komba Maka, were frank because we were given advice, » has declared Jean de Dieu Ilunga Mwenda, president of the CDM Company’s inter-union group, after the hearing. ‎ ‎The trade unionist has specified that the file is on the employer’s table pending resolutions, before asking the workers to remain calm because the inter-union committee is working hard to find solutions together with the employer. ‎
